ATI's Radeon X1900 Heats Up With 48 Shader Units | Tom's Hardware

"At the weigh-in before his title fight, the words 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee' would become engrained into the minds of millions. After beating Sonny Liston, Cassius Clay became Mohammad Ali, 'The Greatest.' Okay, this is only about graphics cards and not the lives of men in the ring, but the heavyweight battle for gaming hardware has never been more contentious."

BetaNews | Philly Wi-Fi Moves Closer to Reality

"EarthLink has finalized a contact to blanket the city of Philadelphia with wireless Internet access, the city said on Monday. Pending approval by City Council in February, construction of the 135-square-mile wireless hot spot would start shortly after signing of the contract.

A test area would be built out over a 15-square-mile area of Northeast Philadelphia to prove the system's effectiveness. If the test is successful, the entire city could be wireless by the spring of next year."

Patent spat forces businesses to upgrade Office | CNET News.com

"The software maker said Monday that it has been forced to issue new versions of Office 2003 and Office XP, which change the way Microsoft's Access database interacts with its Excel spreadsheet.
The move follows a verdict last year by a jury in Orange County, Calif., which found in favor of a patent claim by Guatemalan inventor Carlos Armando Amado. Microsoft was ordered to pay $8.9 million in damages for infringing Amado's 1994 patent. That award covered sales of Office between March 1997 and July 2003. "

FAQ: Getting a handle on Windows Vista | CNET News.com

"When will Windows Vista arrive?
Microsoft has promised that Vista will be widely available on computers for the 2006 holiday buying season. Microsoft released the first beta, or test, version in July. The company is also issuing a series of interim builds, or community technology previews. The first of those was released in September and a follow-up version came in October and December. The company plans a business-oriented test version in the first quarter of 2006 and a more consumer-centered preview for the second quarter. The server version of Longhorn is slated for 2007. "

LA sues maker of 'Grand Theft Auto' | CNET News.com

"The city attorney of Los Angeles has filed a lawsuit against New York-based Take-Two Interactive Software, alleging that the company engaged in unfair business practices by covering up pornographic material in the popular video game in order to avoid an Adults Only rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board.
Many retailers refuse to sell titles with Adults Only ratings, limiting the market for such games.
'Greed and deception are part of the 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' story--and in that respect, its publishers are not much different from the characters in their story,' LA City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo said in a statement Thursday. 'Businesses have an obligation to truthfully disclose the content of their products--whether in the food we eat or the entertainment we consume.' "

Intel First to Demonstrate Working 45nm Chips

New Technology Will Improve Performance and Energy Efficiency of Future Intel Platforms

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 25, 2006 – "Intel Corporation today announced it has become the first company to reach an important milestone in the development of 45 nanometer (nm) logic technology. Intel has produced what are believed to be the first fully functional SRAM (Static Random Access Memory) chips using 45nm process technology, its next– generation, high–volume semiconductor manufacturing process."

Drops in die size don't always equate to major leaps in performance in my opion. In fact there are 110 nm and 90 nm Athlons that are very similair. Really The only reason to switch was the added features, like a lower heat profile. They for the most part take less wattage to run as they get smaller.

The next big boost to the CPU after a die shink is space. Space to add features like virtualization, more cache (see Mram and Zram in earlier posts). Does this mean someone like me who clunked down for a A64 s939 +4000 will upgrade when either Intel, or AMD comes out with the better 45nm chip? No, most likely not right away. If the features that are added though, make that much of a difference in my computing experience, then I would consider it, and that would also be when I move to dual core.

ATI Ships One Hundred Million Imageon'R' Media Processors

Basically another boast to ATI investors about their Imageon mobile device graphics processor. I for one, havn't used any mobile devices, that required 3d. I mean it is nice and all, but when I am out and about I am usually doing something so why would I be sitting around playing games? This is more important to the kids who get stuck at grandmas, or for those long car trips stuck in the back seat. Or of course, if I am stuck at the airport, and the bar is closed.

HIV Prevention Hope: Yogurt Bugs That Make Antiviral Drugs | Science Blog

"Researchers have come up with a novel delivery system for anti-AIDS drugs: milk-curdling bacteria used to make yogurt and cheese."
Hopefulley there is something to this stuff. I know there have probably been many people affected by this in some way shape or form during there lives. While this doesnt look like a cure, it is something that could be sold the same way a spermicide is, to prevent infection. Also, who knows, this is the type of thinking that might help come up with a cure.

Yahoo throws in the search towel

"The Internet became less interesting today as Yahoo showed signs that it has given up in its battle with Google for best search engine. The company, while not abandoning its search, isn't expecting to make great inroads with it, either. Google appears to have left Yahoo breathless, and ready for a break."

Inside Firefox - The Inside Track on Firefox Development

Wooohooo can't wait to try out the new version when it does come out. I love trying out new software releases.

"From a development point of view, the idea of Firefox 2 is to deliver significant user experience enhancements on top of a relatively stable rendering engine as significant retooling is done on the main development trunk for what will become Firefox 3, and deliver them in a timely fashion. By being deliberately cautious with our goals for the rendering engine, we hope to avoid long cycles of shake and bake that delayed Firefox 1.5 (which had more substantial Gecko changes than user interface changes)."

ATI launched X1900 Series Today.

ATI has launched the X1900 series today as promised. Seems like this is the real deal this time, unlike with the R520. They had counted on releasing the RD580 based motherboards today as well but we have learned that those will be pushed back to early Feb. Well, can't complain too much right? For those that have the cash, head to your e-tailor of choice and scoop one up! Now I am not much of an nVidia fan, but I would like to see what the G71 will be like against this, as this is what the X1900 series will compete with, NOT the 7800GTX. Although, it could be said that the X1900 is what the X1800 was SUPPOSED to be, and nVidia and ATI just rushed a product out for the yule sales race. In fact, I think that is exactly happened. I feel sorry for those that slammed down for that X1800, but then again, if you are reading this you are "in the know" and should have known to wait.

MRAM-Info: Magnetic RAM news, forums, articles and more.

I thought maybe that this site might be of interest to some people. Magnetic ram woud be able to retain data during a power loss, and could store more information per physical area. Also viable for replacing FLASH, Platter Hard Drives, and DRAM varients. The new MRAM tech uses an asymetric design to create a "vortex state" or nanorings. That means no stray magnetic fields...often a problem in electronics. Check out the articles, and bookmark this page.

Big Content would like to outlaw things no one has even thought of yet

Does anybody remember back in the day when you would record a song you knew was about to play on your boombox and would hand it out to friends. Or remember that thing called VHS we all used to love and when a movie came out on HBO or Cinemax we would record it and watch it with all are friends or even....get this....gave it away :::a hush falls over the crowd::: These things are nothing new. It just seems that with the blossoming of the Internet and digital media, the big entertainment companies feel the need to change everything and regulate even the devices we can use...that havn't even been dreamed up yet. How the hell do they get away with this? None of them are starving, they all make HUGE amounts of money. I am sorry I just have no sympathy for the Devil. These types of initiatives need to be brought to a DEAD STOP! Article brought to you by the great folks over at arstechnica.com

Wired News: Smartcard Key to Flier Fast Lane

The TSA has been working on a plan for issuing a smart card for frequent flyers. It ill hold ten finger prints on it and the card holder goes through a separate line and gets their finger print compared to that on the card.
This is meant to help get people on board quicker as many people complain about wait times through security at the boarding area.
I myself have already come up with a solution that is fool proof when executed properly. I arrive at the airport early, go through security in less than 10 minutes, and then after I recover from getting tackled for that chain and lighter in my pocket I forgot to suspiciously ditch in front of the security folk, I head over to the bar, have two pints of Guinness, and watch the game until the plane pulls up to the terminal. It also helps for the pressure during take off as well. Read the article for a full description of the proposed procedure.

Source: MSN, Yahoo Turn Over Search Terms to Feds

Deffinatley an interesting turn of events here. In a twist, MSN and Yahoo admit to handing over their search data over to the government. I do not like this at all. It sets a precedent I think, that is to the detriment of our freedoms. According to one of the spokesheep they "didn't hand over any personally identifiable information. Although the intention is well, to enact a law that was struck down on porn filtering so children wouldn't see it, I do not think this is the right way to go about it. In fact, if there wasn't something fundamentally wrong with the law, it would NOT have been struck down in the first place. It will be interesting to see how things develop.

AOL News - Google Rebuffs Feds on Search Request

This is what I like to see. Many people have concerns about Google and privacy. I have a problem with government collecting data on its citizens like this. The fact that Google is putting up some resistance EVEN THOUGH in its privacy policy it says they respect gov't requests, makes me give them a lot of respect. Keep up the good fight!

Wired News: The Importance of Being Pretty

No no no, I am not ragging on all of you fuggly people out there. Personally I like the whole plain look. Too much flashy stuff going on detracts from the content and may cause siezures...

Sysintegrators LLC--All your chocolate are belong to US

This is what happens when you leave the IT department in the hands of Sysintegrators (A SCO Partner). I was looking foward to that chocolate too...its dark...sweet...nutty..taste...um, ahem, I digress. The moral of this story is "if you got it, eat it, or someone else will"

NOTE: The people at Sysintegrators are actually great people and provide a great service and are always there when one of us blows something up to help pick up the pieces.

If you are a business in need of IT expertise then look no further. http://www.sysintegrators.com/

FrozenCPU.com

I received my first order from FrozenCPU.com about a week or two ago. In usual style I grabbed what I needed and didn't dig to the bottom puffed plastic stuff. First thing I did notice though was the invoice, cool, I like to know I only got charged for what I am receiving. Then I saw a note that looked like it was typed out on notepad that stated they didn't have the product in stock, replaced it with a similar item, still did the custom sleeve job and credited my account the difference. I was rather impressed by this. Never have I received that kind of personal attention from an e-tailor. Newegg is great and all, but do people actually work there?

Nevermind that, fast forward to this Saturday. I was cleaning out the apartment and I pick up the fluff filled box and dug around to make sure no little pieces (what I like to call extra parts) were floating around and lo and behold a t shirt! I did not order such t shirt, but there it was! I realized that living on Long Island being nerd is IN! So I put that baby on and drove with the girlfriend to Dave and Busters and gamed the night away in my nerdy glory.

Although I didn't pick up any women, my friend read the front slowly.."Frozen CPU?....Isn't that bad?" Of course I had to laugh but he hasn't a clue about overclocking or any of that type of stuff.

In the end I look at it like this. Free advertising for them, free shirt for me, everyone's happy!

Look back in the future for an actual review of FrozenCPU.com, and many other only E-tailors that cater to the enthusiast community.

Apple's Breakthrough New iMac® Features ATI's Radeon® Graphics to Deliver a State of the Art Visual Experience for Consumers

I wish that their stock price was as enthusiastic as they are about their products. For the record no I am not a fanboy of nVidia, I own an X800XT. :-P
I have at times considered buying a Mac as a second PC, and mostly because of my better half who LOVES the newer machines. The only thing I thought was lacking was the...well...lack of a decent graphics card that was made for mac's . The X1600 would sweeten the deal I guess but...but, why not a X1900XTX Mac edition???? With those huge 30 inch displays that kind of horsepower would not go wasted.

Press Releases

AMD Has released the latest and greatest of the s939 platform. The AMD Athlon 64 FX Dual-Core processor brings a new age to the FX line of CPU's. Up until now they have only been single core. Also, with this chip users no longer have to sacrifice performance in single threaded apps. This beast runs two cores at 2.6GHZ each, and 2 MB cache (1 MB per core). Of course, for this kind of performance, you have to pay upwards of 1k, and that is just out of the reach of the common consumer. Although AMD's price/value ratio has been pretty good as of late, it seems that with there top of the line products Intel and AMD have found a common ground.

Apple develops Microsoft Vista of opportunity

These Brits always give me a good laugh, while also keeping me in the loop...kinda.

GPLv3 Draft

Day old news, but what can I say, I work just like you!

A draft of the GPLv3 has been released for commenting by the public. This time around we see wording against software patents, and Sony's favorite little toy, DRM. I am sure most have you heard about the whole debacle concerning the root kits that Sony's CD's were installing onto obviously "lawful" peoples PC's (They did PURCHASE that disk did they not?????) I am so far happy with the draft and will take the time to read over it some more as time allows.

CNN.com - Stardust canister in 'pristine' condition - Jan 16, 2006

Omega strain anyone? Seriously though. After 7 years the Stardust space capsule splashed down in Utah. It was on a mission to do a flyby with Wild 2 and in the process captured dust particles from the comet. Take a minute to review the article. Interesting stuff

Off topic, but I am sure It will ring true

Shifting Paradigms

The wisdom and understanding of our own inner essence is a beacon thatdraws us inward toward ever deeper connection with the Divine. Yet ratherthan look for divine wisdom within, most people have long preferred tolook outward, thus maintaining a dependence upon a vast hierarchy thatstretches between the individual and the Divine. In all our wanderingsaway from the Divine, humankind has obscured its most compelling featuresthrough a persistent belief in limitations defined by the hierarchicalstructure of our world. The Divine dances outside of the confines of any hierarchicalstructures. It is complete within itself, and has a singular purpose ofdemonstrating the collective potential of all life within the universe. Itis the archetype of perfection. It is the standard bearer of each soul'sinnate design and ultimate destiny. The essence of the Divine is so farbeyond mental conception that humanity's tendency is to resort to thelimiting language of hierarchical belief systems to define it. The Hierarchical Paradigm: Searching for Connection and Wholeness When people are unaware of their inner wisdom and wholeness, they searchfor order and security outside themselves. Uncertain of their place withinthe hierarchical order of the world, they tend to define themselves basedupon their insecurities. Individuals thus become only pieces of theirwholeness and like shards of glass from a beautiful vase, they bear littleresemblance to their aggregate beauty. Within the hierarchy, many in highpositions of power have taken advantage of our collective insecurities inattempting to guide the development of all humankind. They have obscuredthe direct connection between the individual and the Divine through avariety of means designed to intercede between our inner essence and ourdivine source. Each individual can come to know themselves to be free of all forms ofhierarchical control. This is not to imply that we should not trust othersor join together in bonds of friendship and community. It is simply areminder that relative truth is constantly shifting in the hands of thosewho desire to control. And even when the motive for their controllingbehaviors may be of good will, it is still a form of control. When therevealers of "truth" within the hierarchy withhold and suppressinformation, they are usually positioned to acquire and maintain powerrather than disseminating empowerment to all. The desire for connection and wholeness is a fuel that drives us to seekout and explore the hierarchical paradigm. This inner longing provides uswith the motivation to seek help and guidance from a specific group withinthe hierarchy, and in so doing, cultivate a sense of belonging andconnection. Furthermore, the hierarchical paradigm is a stage whereby wedevelop a sense of connection to some grand, encompassing vision. This iswhy the hierarchy nurtures prophets who point toward a greater vision. Spiritual leaders are able to peer deeply beneath the surface reality oflife and experience how intricately connected every life form is, and howthe composite of all life is intelligent far beyond measure. Thesevisionary leaders can thus interpret reality through their personalabilities to perceive and express life's dimensional depth and limitlessintelligence. Yet no one is able to articulate life's full dimensionaldepth and breadth with the tools of language. They can only, at best, describe their interpretation or their impressions. In actuality, all of us are able to peer beneath the surface reality oflife and perceive a unique vision of the universe. We require only timeand intention to develop our own interpretations. And this is preciselywhat many great spiritual leaders have taught. Life's deeper essence isnot an absolute to be experienced by the chosen few, but an evolving, dynamic intelligence that wears as many faces as there are life forms. Nogroup or people has the exclusive portal into the universe by which theDivine expresses itself in all its majesty. The portal is open andavailable to all, because the Divine is within all things. Those who are recognized as great prophets each produced a vision of theuniverse beyond what was currently defined by the hierarchy. Because theirinterpretations were articulated with authority and depth of insight, theybecame a target of debate among various groups in the hierarchy. Thisdebate then created a polarity of belief. A sympathetic constituencyemerged to defend and embellish their leader's interpretation, whileestablished groups held it in contempt of previously held beliefs.Invariably, the leader's vision became confined and shaped into dogma byfollowers who desired to create a religion or sect. Thus, this infusion offresh insight quietly receded into the hands of the hierarchy, where itsdeeper meaning was obscured by the very fact that it was incorporated intoa massive structure that both protected and promoted it. The Transformation Paradigm: Inner Wisdom and Understanding A new paradigm is emerging that promotes a clear connection ofindividual consciousness to the compelling features of the Divine withoutthe intervention of a hierarchy. This is when the fables and myths ofhistory step into the light and become known as they were originallyintended. This is the time when language will be transformed into a newform of communication that breaks down all barriers of control. Personaltransformation, through the awakening of inner wisdom and understanding,is the pathway into wholeness. The transformation paradigm is initiated simply by the recognition thatrather than the dependency-inducing ways of the hierarchical paradigm, there are accelerated, independent pathways that bypass the hierarchy andlead to self-mastery. These new pathways lead to the divine wisdom andunderstanding that is present within all of us. This wisdom can beaccessed through the practice of three principles of transformation:seeing the Divine in all, nurturance of life, and gratitude. Theapplication of these life principles disengages individuals from thecontrolling elements of the hierarchy, thus initiating the transformationexperience. As there are relative truths, there are relative freedoms. Asindividuals evolve through the hierarchical process, an ever-increasingsense of freedom is gained, yet external forces continue to exert controlthrough limiting language and confining belief systems. These controllinginfluences lead to continued reliance upon the hierarchy as it unceasinglyattempts to impose a sense of inequality between us. The underlyingequation of the hierarchical paradigm is: individual + hierarchy = Godconnection. In the case of personal transformation it is: individual +inner wisdom and understanding = divine equality with all. The Synthesis Paradigm: Integration For those who feel called, the time has come to integrate the dominantparadigm of the hierarchy with the expanding transformation paradigm. Thisintegration occurs naturally once we have fully explored the two paradigmsand develop a synthesis paradigm whereby transformation is attained bysearching for connection and wholeness through our own inner wisdom andunderstanding. It is this combination of release from dependency on thehierarchy and transformation from within that initiates the synthesisparadigm. Once we take responsibility for our own transformation and integration,it does not mean that the hierarchy is to be shunned or avoided. Thehierarchy is quite benign as a manipulative force and merely representsone important stage in the journey toward wholeness. What is being set inmotion now is the initial preparation for these paradigm shifts. Morespecifically, these paradigms will be simultaneously played out over thecoming years. As always, it will be the choice of each one of us as towhich paradigm we embrace in our journey. All of the highest imaginings of humanity are yet unaware of our deepestfoundation. We have sought the upper reaches of the building, yet remainunaware of the foundation's design. It is here, at the very core ofexistence that the Divine is bursting forth with its creative energy whilesimultaneously reintegrating with its invitation to wholeness. It is herethat equality is realized, not in the lofty places of relative truthlodged in the hierarchy, but rather in the deepest part of thefoundational plan of life's original source and ultimate destiny. Theorigin and destiny of existence is the tone of equality in life. Listenfor this tone-this frequency of vibration-and follow it back into the veryfoundation from whence all things arise and return. Consider these words as symbols only. Feel the truth that stands behindthese words, and tap into this empowering energy force that reaches outfor you. Know it as a tone or vibration-a resonance that waits for youaround every corner in which your life will turn. It is a beacon of theDivine gathering itself into the form of language in order to usher you toa place from which you can experience the formless tone of equality-thebypass of limitation. It is the primal language of our divine source thatbestows to you the freedom to generate your own deepest beauty in theexpression of your highest truth.

UNIX Migration pains

You know, it has actually been a couple months since we switched from the old Unixware box, to the new Openserver box. Everything is going ok but the ONE thing that I miss is having the ability to navigate the server right through network neighborhood. It made it very easy to retrieve files to import into applications or to send as email attachments. We had a software package called VisionFS on the old machine that we havn't installed on the new box for whatever reason. VisionFS does the same thing as samba in Linux for those that do not know. Unfotunatley I do not make the final call as to what we do with our main server here. That is the Directors job. I think I will throw in the recommendation, for Vision, or Samba to be implemented again. Believe it or not, it saves time!

Nikon to Stop Producing Film Cameras

Apparently the makers of my oh so stylish and handy Coolpix 4600 have decided to stop producing the 35mm varient. Where I can see this as being ok
I am not QUITE sure it is a good idea. You still have to spend a pretty peny in order to get a dCam that can take pictures as fast as a 35mm. Granted there is more convenience with digitals as more and more people keep their photos online and on networking websites. There are arguments for and against. Read more here.

Cold Laundry

I would just like to add, that it is rediculously cold in this apartment, and I never brought in my laundry from my car after doing it yesterday lol. Now I remember WHY I don't like the cold. I am never scared of leaving the house when its HOT. Bastards. ::shiver::

New Look, New Camera

Exit68.net is mostly a blog so I now use a much simpler method of updating instead of fudging around with raw html. Who has time for that anyways? I picked up a Nikon 4600 Coolpix today and I am having way to much fun with it. I have a myspace account at www.myspace.com/ryox03. If you want to add me feel free to. Just make sure to let me know that this was where you found me :-). As a introductory blog, I guess I should tell you that I am just your average guy from Long Island, New York. I try to stay out of trouble and just make it to work and back every day. Much like everyone else. Of course, we all have shit that just happens. I guess that it makes us all feel better to read about other peoples lives and to realize that bad stuff doesnt just happen to ourselves. Or if it is something a little "out there", that you aren't the only one, and not crazy.
